2019 Mazda CX-5 Diesel review: Was it really worth the wait?

by Jimmy Nina (2019-11-14)

The automaker is stepping its game up, hoping to differentiate from its traditional competition by offering more premium vehicles with better interiors, materials, comfort and attention to detail. The new CX-5 is the second in the lineup to get the "Mazda Premium" treatment. Wayne Cunningham/Roadshow In 2016, the launch of Mazda's CX-9 SUV was also the launch of the automaker's "Mazda Premium" initiative.

A bit of carpet here, a seam filled there, door seals improved, body gaps reduced -- dozens and dozens of tweaks were made with the result being that the CX-5's cabin is noticeably quieter at highway speeds. That same obsessive nature that led its engineers to reduce weight by shaving wire harnesses on the MX-5 roadster has been applied to chasing unnecessary decibels in the CX-5's cabin. What you can't see in the pictures is the ridiculous attention to detail that Mazda brought to noise reduction.

The CX-5 really shines when driven, which is good because, well, it's a car. mazda x5 has proven that it has a knack for knowing what an "engaging drive" actually means, what we're actually looking for when describing a car as "sporty" and delivering that experience with its vehicles.

This is a fantastic resource, and you need to make sure that you keep it with you at all times. If you've misplaced your owner's manual, you can get a pdf online and print it out or store it on your smartphone. Without a doubt, the best resource that you have for your Mazda car is the owner's manual. Everything that you need to know about your car is in the owner's manual including fault finding.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, goes the old saying. When you've got a winning formula, it's usually not a good idea to go fiddling with things, lest you accidentally ruin a perfectly good thing.

Clearly nobody told Mazda this. And now, just 5 years post-launch, Mazda debuts the CX-5's second generation. The Mazda CX-5 was only just introduced in 2012 and has rapidly risen to become the best-selling model in Mazda's lineup. Over the years, Mazda constantly tweaked this small SUV's formula, giving it multiple revisions, facelifts and midyear refreshes.

Surprisingly, that's only about 2 mpg less than what I averaged with the 2.0-liter engine, a slight efficiency hit that I'd gladly take to have 29 more horsepower and 35 more pound-feet of twist at hand. The EPA reckons the FWD model I tested will get 32 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg in the city, averaging out to a combined 27 mpg. I averaged about 25.5 mpg during my testing, lining up well enough with the EPA's numbers. The direct-injected engine uses lightweight, low-friction materials and is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission with both front- and all-wheel drive variants.

Cargo space is pegged at 15.2 cubic feet by European measurement standards, which Mazda says is roomy enough to fit a large baby stroller and a large bag. Mazda says it designed the seat cushions so passengers can slide in and out more easily. Mazda Interior room is said to be generous given the CX-30's exterior dimensions.

Compared to the 2016.5 CX-5 that I tested last year, this 2017 model, in Grand Touring Premium trim, boasts more comfortable seats, a cabin with nicer leather and real stitching and even a steering wheel that Mazda reconfigured for better comfort. The cockpit features the same great Mazda ergonomics that I loved in prior CX-5s, but now the dashboard boasts an improved design that looks a class above the older cabin, with new metallic accents and a strong horizontal theme.

Actually, it's because driving the CX-5 reminds me of the Miata. It's no secret that the CX-5 is one of my favorites, if not the favorite, in this vehicle class and it's not just because looking at it reminds me of the Mazda MX-5 Miata. 2016.5 Mazda CX-5
The 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 is a mid-year update to a fun little SUV with a playful, puppy dog face.

This will help you to avoid breaking down with a flat battery. Check the car battery periodically to make sure that the fluid levels are at the optimal level. If you find that starting in the morning is difficult, it could be a sign that your car battery is getting low.

If you're planning a longer journey, it's a good idea to check your washer bottle fluid before you set off. So, take the time to check the fluid levels and carefully top up as needed. This is very easy to top up, and it can be a real help if your windscreen is smeared or splattered with dirt and mud on the road. The three main fluids that you need to keep an eye on are brake, oil, and coolant. All of these will be checked during your regularly scheduled service, but if the service interval is too long, you may find that your fluid levels can drop.

From a power delivery and harmonics standpoint, the CX-5's diesel powerplant is very impressive. It's also perfectly smooth while spinning up to the high-for-a-diesel 5,500-rpm redline, making quick work of highway on-ramp merges. There's some ever-so-slight diesel garble as you roll onto the throttle, with punchy thrust down low in the rev range.
